Wounds with embedded objects

wk-120-object-thighWounds with embedded foreign objects can be extremely distressing for the care/parent. Remaining calm and diverting the infants or child’s attention from the wound can be beneficial in administering effective treatment and may assist with the prevention of shock.

 

 

  • Divert the infant’s or child’s attention from the wound
  • Either hold or sit or lay the infant or child down on a firm stable base to assist in preventing and treating shock
  • Apply dressings and pressure to either side of the embedded object
  • Apply a larger dressing if possible over the top
  • Ask the child to assist if possible
  • Secure the dressing in place
  • Contact the emergency services and monitor the infant or child and, if required treat for shock.
