Several million people in England and Wales suffer from gastroenteritis each year, many of these will have food poisoning and a few will die.
Salmonella levels have reduced as a result of vaccination the egg-laying poultry and the use of pasteurised liquid egg.
The increased amount of training and the implementation of food safety management systems such as HACCP, may also have had an effect.
