Not only is it illegal to smoke in any enclosed public space, there is also a risk of contaminating food from

  • fingers which touch lips and may transfer bacteria to food;
  • cigarette ends contaminated with saliva being placed on working surfaces;
  • cigarette ends and ash ( physical contamination); and
  • coughing.

Legible notices should be displayed instructing food handlers who need to smoke to use specified locations and never to smoke in the food rooms. After smoking, food handlers should wash their hands.
