Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP)

PSP and DSP may result from the consumption of mussels and other bivalves which have fed on poisonous plankton. The aquatic biotoxins causing PSP and DSP may withstand cooking. Symptoms of PSP include a tingling or numbness of the mouth almost immediately and this spreads  to the neck, arms and legs within 4 to 6 hours. Death, when it does occur, is usually caused by respiratory paralysis within 2 to 12 hours. DSP symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and chills with an onset time of 30 minutes to 12 hours.
