Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A

Infectious hepatitis is a viral infection with an abrupt onset. Symptoms include fever, malaise, nausea, abdominal pain and later jaundice. The incubation period is 15 to 50 days and the duration one week to several months. Man is the reservoir and transmission is by the faecal-oral route. Faeces, blood and urine may be infected and can contaminate food, especially water, shellfish and milk.

Control measures are similar to those used for the typhoid. A temperature of 90°C for 90 seconds will inactivate the virus.
